Since January 14, the North Cowichan/Duncan area has been plagued by 28 thefts from communal mailboxes, some in rural settings but most in the lobbies of apartment buildings around downtown Duncan. In a majority of instances the apartment buildings themselves were broken into; the suspect damaging the door and often prying and damaging the mailboxes.
Postal inspectors for security investigations with Canada Post have been working in conjunction with the police.
A 29-year-old man, formerly of Alberta, was arrested and charged in a number of these reported thefts on March 18. Daynen Giese has been formally charged with one count of break and enter, two counts of theft from mail, two counts of fail to comply with an Undertaking, Theft under $5000 in relation to shoplifting, and eight counts of possession of property obtained by crime. Giese was held in custody for a provincial court appearance March 22. He was remanded to VIRCC for an additional week at that hearing.
